Borderlands History

Borderlands started a long time ago in a city far away…

Borderlands plays music from at least five era's, five genre's, and four countries. Inspired by artists' such as Great Big Sea, The Pogue's, The Grateful Dead, Green Day, Woody Guthrie, David Alan Coe, Johnny Cash, The Talking Heads, The Saw Doctors, Neil Young, The Violent Femmes, and many, many more, Borderlands approach to music has been to play what sounds good regardless of origin or age. Including many traditional pieces and inspired Appalachian music, Borderlands sound ranges somewhere between rock, folk, bluegrass, punk and country, with a bit of everything for every crowd.

Though originally starting in 1995 in Minneapolis, MN, this incarnation of Borderlands began in 2005, playing as regulars for the Mill Street Inn in Cambridge, WI. Other shows followed and members were added. Soon they were playing regular shows in Monona at the South Bay Lounge and Grill. It was time to make a demo. The band hunkered down and recorded three songs in Kurt's basement; Fisherman's Blues, a wild Irish piece from The Waterboys, Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash, and California Stars, written by Woody Guthrie and performed by Billy Bragg & Wilco.

Borderlands recently played for the Jefferson County Performing Arts ‘All-Natural Show,' as well as playing Lake Mills Summer and Fall Festivals and numerous private parties. With performances that range from kid-friendly to pub atmosphere, Borderlands fits the mood of the venue in ways that other bands simply can't. Kurt Griesemer (Guitar, Lead Vocals, Bodhran), Brent Richter (Mandolin, Guitar, Vocals), Craig Jewell (Bass, Vocals) and Jim Turk (Drums and Percussion, Vocals), seasoned musicians from many different styles of music, make Borderlands sound sing out.
